Olympic games oldest torch bearer

Diana Gould
One-hundred-year-old Diana Gould has become the oldest torch bearer for the games as the flame nears the end of its 12 000 kilometre journey.

This as Olympic fever grips London ahead of tomorrow's opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Games.

Gould carried the torch through north London before handing
it over to the mayor, Boris Johnson.

"I think she did an amazing job. She didn't even use her stick - and she is 100. She carried the whole thing, all the way. And you saw the reception she got, absolutely incredible," he said after watching her.

The torch relay ends with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron tomorrow evening in the presence of 60 000 spectators. Gould said the walk had not been too difficult.  "The sun was a bit hot, but the walk was fine. Absolutely. I used to live in Hendon, so I knew where I was walking. Fine."

After a lunchtime break, actor Rupert Grint took over the flame. Grint is best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

A strike by border staff that had threatened to disrupt proceedings has been called off and spectators are pouring into the British capital.

The torch relay ends with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron tomorrow evening in the  presence of 60 000 spectators,  including Queen Elizabeth and a host of celebrities and dignitaries.

Another one billion people are expected to tune in around the world for the Olympic opening ceremony directed by film-maker Danny Boyle.
