The Nigerian constitution prohibits discrimination on the grounds of gender, but customary and religious laws continue to restrict women’s right. Incidence of early marriage is between 18-21 years of age in the north, it is between 12-15 - Genderindex.org (2012).

In Nigeria according the official newsletter of the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics show that women are worst affected by HIV and death at the rates of more than 55% between 2008 and 2010. [Source: Federal Ministry of Health].

The Nigerian nation state has been one sordid tale of irony. Due to a strong patriarchal hold, women have been on the receiving end of inequality and consequently, Nigeria has suffered. Statistics have revealed a lack of participation in governance by women. A staggering 92.7 percent the seats in the Nigerian senate are occupied by men. In the National House of Assembly, the figure is much higher – 93.9%.

More statistics reveal how women have not been included in public discourse. Of 26 Ministers, 20 are men, 93.6 % of Parliamentary seats, 94.5% of state house of assembly, 96.5% of permanent secretaries and 90.8% of Directorates have been occupied by men.

 

When benchmarked against statistics showing that a greater percentage of female headed households were ‘non-poor’ as against their male counterpart, the irony becomes apparent (56.5% of female headed households as against 33.6% male households. This inequality and the understanding of the pivotal role of women in national development, informs the vision of the Women empowerment and Enlightenment Campaign [WEEC].

WEEC sponsored (Cash price) the Female Entrepreneur of the Year awards at the PEAK Awards, a student based awards for economic and social achievements which saw Miss Abiodun Adegoke CEO of Beez Entertainment as the winner.  She is responsible for the unique Arewa Offa (A cultural pageant) held once a year in Offa, Kwara state as part of the annual Offa celebration.

WEEC (Women Empowerment and Enlightenment Campaign) brought its empowerment series to the University of Lagos in an exclusive event tagged WEEC Unilag. The concept of the event was bringing successful female Alumni of the University of Lagos to empower the female undergraduates with true life experiences. GT da Guitarman thrilled the students with his kind words to the female students and with his songs to show tremendous support for women empowerment and WEEC. Thirty minutes it was, when GT da Guitar man married his guitar and sang his most popular songs and latest singles. GT held the crowd spellbound when he invited a female student to rap along with him while he played his guitar, the lady who was randomly selected showed how talented she was on the mic.

Then, Tosin Bucknor from Top radio (90.9) and Sasha P (first Nigerian Female Rapper) both Alumni of the University of Lagos of the Law department took the stage at different times to give strong, encouraging and motivating words to the listening audience.

The highlight of the event was the presence of Sasha P when she was meant to be celebrating her birthday with friends and family, she dedicated time to empowering other women. This was highly appreciated by the On'y va Concepts Ltd, University of Lagos, WEEC and the Students alike. WEEC also surprised her with a cake and the students sang for her wishing her a happy birthday.

THE WEEC COORDINATOR MET WITH THE DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS IN A POST EVENT ANALYSIS OF WEECUnilag

The focus of WEEC was met with the burning desire of the Dean of Students affairs of the University of Lagos to reach out to the women and men alike on the need to respect one another. Professor Kayode Amund emphasized that if men understood women the world would be a better place.

After the successful completion of the collaboration of WEEC and the University of Lagos, it became necessary for both parties to organise a post event meeting and evaluation of the just concluded event. The Dean was delighted that a graduate from the University of Lagos and a man is first of all coming back to give back to the University and also concerned about the empowering women.

In the company of the deputy dean, Dr Mrs Soremekun, the head of the Guidance and Counselling unit Mrs Asiwaju and other senior staff of the Department, Kayode Odukoya, the project coordinator of WEEC and the Professor Kayode Amund discussed extensively on the importance of the involvement of men in the women empowerment process.

There was a resolution the that the involvement of men is the missing link in the empowerment of women at all levels and the Dean pledged his support at future events in any capacity he can contribute. WEEC added to the support for the department by presenting a plasma TV to the deputy dean and a recognition award to the dean for his support and good works among the students.  

WEEC has been involved in different shows across fashion, education, awards etc.

  -  Sponsored the PEAK awards (a youth social initiative) which we intend to re-orientate their mindset with the next edition.

      -          We have given motivational speeches at different schools. For example University of Lagos. All centered on the Nigerian female youth 

            -          We are currently designing reality shows for the different categories of women in our target audience.

  Sponsorship criteria for both rural and urban youth are being design.  

  

      -         Scholarship categories are worked out.

Enormous public relations strategies would be deployed from the very first event.

We hope to engage the government and corporate bodies to partner with us on this project but on our own, we would do the much we can until we get responses from these different sectors.

Details of future programmes are going to be made available on a later date which would span across trending activities that are capable of achieving our objectives.
