A South African politician is now the first female leader of the African Union (AU) ending months of bitter deadlock at the continental body.
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was the South African home affairs minister at the time of the appointment during a summit of heads of state and government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Dlamini-Zuma is the first woman to lead the continent since the Organisation of African Unity, later the AU, was founded in 1963.
Cheering broke out at the AU's headquarters as supporters of Dlamini-Zuma, 63, celebrated her victory over the incumbent Jean Ping of Gabon
She is also the first from southern Africa. She faces the challenge of revitalising a body often criticised for its slow and ineffective response to crisis such as those in Ivory Coast and Libya last year. She is up to the task all men and leaders in African should give her all their support. Information got to us that Goodluck Jonathan was in support of her election. Women Empowerment is actually being felt in Africa.
